New Spring / Summer Colours

When you go to design school they teach you about making a theme or story for your "collection". Having never been to design school, I don't know how to do this and so usually there is no theme to the fabrics I choose for my bags. I see a fabric I like, I buy it, I make a bag...simple.

I've decided for my next range of bags that I'm going to try a colour theme. I think it will give some continuity to my bags and also make them look great for my market stalls as they'll all match.

So, here is my BIG reveal; my colours for this season are.....

Did you feel it? Did something amazing happen inside you? If not, just keep staring at the photos for a while longer and I'm sure it will happen eventually.

Last weekend I found my first bit of fabric for my collection. I'm going to make some clutches out of these fabrics. They're very soft and feel lovely to touch.
I'm hoping to have three done for the Eveleigh Markets this Sunday.

Now I'm just waiting for Amy Butler to release her new collection, Soul Blossoms, as that will go well with my colour theme. If it's out by November I can buy up big on my USA trip.

The Craft Room was great fun on Saturday; such a funky space to teach in.
Check out the bag Martina made . She did so well, not a single mistake and it looked so good, especially inside with the Amy Butler laminated fabric.
She's going away this weekend, so it was perfect timing to make a new bag to show off to everyone.

A New Bag Design....At Last

So this is what happens when I sit down to design a new workshop bag. I planned to design a bag for the beach, with a plastic pocket to put your wet swimmers in and big enough for a towel etc.
Hmmmm.... not looking much like a beach bag to me.

I started to experiment with leather for the first time and I'm very happy with my first attempt.

I used goats leather which is very soft and smells oh so good....sorry Mr Goat.

I put a leather trim on the bottom so it doesn't get dirty, leather straps and a wide leather trim inside for extra goatness.

Would love to know what you think.

Now... back to designing that beach bag for the workshop.

The Craft Room This Saturday

I’m very excited to be teaching my first Craft Room class this Saturday, run by The Notebook magazine.

I’ll be helping fellow crafters to make a laminated bag like the one below. We will be using Amy Butler specialty fabrics. If you haven't heard of Amy Butler, click on the link to get a new addiction.

The class was scheduled for 9am-12pm but has now been changed to 1pm-4pm. It will be held in the swanky News Magazines studio in Alexandria and has lots of space, with brand new Brother sewing machines to play with. All materials, equipment and refreshments included for $95

I’d love to have you in my class, for bookings go to moshtix.

Enjoy the beautiful sunny day!

New York New York

I'm off to the USA in November and I have no idea where to go for crafty goodness.

I'm hoping some of you have been and have bathed in the crafty delights and bought mountains of the cheap fabric, as I plan to.

If you've been to the land of stars and stripes, I want to hear about it.

Give it to me ladies, tips, good places to go, your favourite spots, great spots for tea and cake, I want it all, especially from the locals Lisa and Kathy.

Working For The Man Or Working For The Love

Now that I'm settled back into life in Sydney I've been thinking about my future and what I want to do with it. As I have bills to pay like everyone else, I have to get a job, as unfortunately Faint Impressions has not made me a wealthy woman......yet.

This is supposed to represent me...thinking....

The opportunity to work full-time in a creative space for the past six months in Melbourne, has made me realise just how important it is to be doing something you really enjoy for work. What is the point in spending your life in a job that gives you minimal satisfaction and makes you dread Monday mornings? One that takes away half of your weekend because come 2pm Sunday afternoon, all you think about it "urgh... back to work tomorrow".

I'm going to really put some thought into finding a job that gets me excited, challenges me creatively and keeps me interested.

I plan to do that by mixing it up with two jobs plus Faint Impressions. I would LOVE to get some work as a photographers assistant. I'm putting my photography resume together now and have put my name down at news magazines photography studio.
I'm not sure what job number two will be yet but I'll let you know as soon as I do.

WINNER Of The Free Pattern Giveaway Is......

BELINDA!!!
Congrats Belinda, you are the lucky winner of the free funky bag patterns.

your name was randomly selected from scrunched up pieces of paper in a hat, such a high tech process.

Please email me your address and I will post your winning package.

In other winners news, I won two free tickets to the album launch of The Verses. So my finished suit jacket bag (sports jacket as my mother corrected me) and I (and Cam) are off to the Vanguard in Newtown tonight to mingle with the music industry folks. Very Exciting!!

Maybe Ella will comment on my bag.

I didn't have enough jacket left for piping the strap, so I added some peltex for support

Playing With Light

I'm taking a photography lighting course at the community college on Monday nights. I'm aiming to eventually get work as a photographers assistant; part of my goal to having a fun and creative job, more about that in my next post.

Our assignment for last week was to practice our portrait photography with natural light. To play around with the shadows and use cardboard etc to fill in the shadows.

I called upon a highly paid model for the shoot; he also moonlights as my gigolo.

Check out my pics, what do you think?

Progress On The Suit Bag

It's Friday!!!! Woo Hoo!

I have progressed a little further on the suit bag (see previous post), I only have the strap to add now.
I think I'm going to make it black with some of the suiting along the sides in piping. I think that will help give the strap more shape and stiffness. What do you think? Suggestions welcome.

I used the top chest suit pocket and also the inner secret pocket to make....pockets

My first attempt at this style of zipper, not bad for first go. Just type "zipper" in the search box at the top and you will see the link for the "concealed zipper". I followed those instructions

If I make another one I'll make it a little shorter so it's not so much like a canoe shape.

I'm going into "The Craft Room" Saturday morning to familiarise myself with the sewing machines. Otherwise we could be in a spot of bother for my Laminated Bag Class.

Matilda's Market is on this Sunday and I've never been. I might check that out to see if it's worth me making kids Bedside Organisers.

Have a great weekend peeps, I'll certainly be enjoying my first weekend back in Sydney town with my side kick, starting with Friday drinks.
